A ration card is an essential document issued by the Indian government to aid the less fortunate members of society with food security. This card allows eligible households to access subsidised food grains and essential commodities through the Public Distribution System (PDS). It plays a crucial role in ensuring food security for economically weaker sections of society, helping them meet their basic nutritional needs at affordable prices.
Apart from being a tool for social welfare, a ration card also serves as valid residential and identity proof. To ensure that only eligible beneficiaries have access to subsidised food grains and other benefits, the government has made it mandatory to link ration and Aadhaar cards. Read on to know more about it.

A Ration Card is a government-issued legal document that acts as identification proof and signifies an individual's economic status. It enables the holder to access various government benefits and schemes.
Yes, it is possible to include family members as beneficiaries on your Ration Card. This can be done either online or offline and requires submitting relevant documents. Eligible family members can include your spouse, children, and daughter-in-law.
If someone in your family already possesses a ration card, you are not eligible to apply for another one. A single ration card is used for the entire family, and the ration is distributed according to the size of the family. A person can only apply for a new card if they are removed from their family member's current card and relocate to a new address.
No, not everyone can apply for a Ration Card. Individuals with higher earning capacity, as fixed by the respective state government, cannot obtain rations at a subsidised cost.
