Types of Ration Cards in Andhra Pradesh

The Government of Andhra Pradesh issues different types of ration cards to residents based on their socio-economic status, particularly their income level and family size. These cards are not only vital for obtaining subsidised food and essential commodities but also serve as proof of identity and residency, playing a significant role in accessing various welfare schemes. The main types of ration cards issued in the state include:

1. White Ration Card (BPL - Below Poverty Line)

The White Ration Card is granted to families that are officially recognised as living Below the Poverty Line (BPL). These households typically have a lower annual income, and the card enables them to access essential food items such as rice, wheat, sugar, kerosene, and pulses at highly subsidised rates through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Benefits:

  1. Access to subsidised food grains and other essential items.
  1. Eligibility for various welfare schemes including housing, health, and education support.
  1. Acts as a proof of economic status for government documentation and financial aid.

2. Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) Ration Card

The AAY Ration Card is a special category introduced under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana scheme, aimed at uplifting the poorest of the poor. It is issued to individuals and families who have no regular source of income or belong to particularly vulnerable groups, such as landless agricultural labourers, marginal farmers, rural artisans, and the elderly without social support.

Benefits:

  1. Entitlement to receive 35 kg of food grains per family per month at very low prices (e.g., Rs.3 per kg for rice and Rs.2 per kg for wheat).
  1. Priority status in welfare programs such as pension schemes and employment guarantee schemes.
  1. Enhanced social security and food security.

3. Pink Ration Card (APL - Above Poverty Line)

Families who fall under the Above Poverty Line (APL) category are issued Pink Ration Cards. These households have relatively stable and higher income levels, which disqualifies them from receiving subsidies under the PDS. However, the card still serves an important function.

Benefits:

  1. Acts as a proof of residence and identity for various non-subsidy related government services.
  1. Required for applying to certain government schemes that are not income restricted.
  1. Can be used for record-keeping and availing digital ration card services.
