The One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme is an initiative by the Government of India. One Nation One Ration Card Scheme Progress Highlights

Here are the main progress points of the One Nation One Ration Card Scheme since its launch:

  1. The One Nation One Ration Card scheme was initially planned for a nationwide rollout by 1 June 2020. 
  1. Approximately 65 crore beneficiaries, or 80% of the total NFSA population in these regions were covered by national portability of ration cards which was enabled across 24 States or UTs by 1 August 2020. 
  1. The remaining 12 States or UTs were integrated into the scheme by March 2021 by the Department of Food and Public Distribution. 
  1. Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed during the Union Budget 2021 announcement that the scheme was operational in 32 States and UTs, benefiting about 69 crore individuals.

Three Indian States Join One-Nation, One-Ration Card Scheme

Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that three more states — Odisha, Sikkim and Mizoram have joined the 'One Nation-One Ration Card' scheme, taking the number of states and union territories which have joined the scheme to 20.

Paswan said that by August, Uttarakhand, Nagaland and Manipur will join the national cluster.

Eligible beneficiaries under the 'One Nation-One Ration Card' initiative would be able to avail their entitled food grains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) from any Fair Price Shop in the country using the same ration card.

The Food Ministry aims to implement the scheme across the country by March 2021.

Paswan said necessary infrastructure work which includes upgradation of electronic Point of Sale (ePoS) software, integration with central Integrated Management of PDS (IM-PDS) and Annavitran portals, availability of ration cards in central repository and testing of national portability transactions has been completed in these three states.

The process to apply for ONORC through offline mode is given below:

  1. Using the Aadhaar number or ration card number, the recipients can visit any Fair Price Shop across the country. 
  1. Any family member with Aadhaar linked to the ration card will be eligible for authentication and ration collection. 
  1. For Aadhaar verification, the beneficiaries can authenticate their identity using either iris or fingerprint.

Andhra Pradesh Government Releases New Ration Card

The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated the process of issuing new ration cards and outlined the guidelines for the same. Starting from December 2, 2024, applications for new ration cards and updates to existing ones are being accepted. The existing cards will be canceled and replaced with new ones. The application period will remain open until December 28, with the distribution of new cards planned for the Sankranti festival. Given the crucial role of ration cards in accessing welfare schemes, a large number of applications are expected. Individuals are eligible to apply if their monthly income is below Rs.10,000 in rural areas or Rs.12,000 in urban areas.

One Nation One Ration Card Initiative Revolutionises Food Security for Migrant Workers Nationwide

The One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme, spearheaded by the central government and executed by the Department of Food and Public Distribution, stands as a groundbreaking initiative aimed at ensuring food security for migrant workers across India. Under the scheme, which enables nationwide portability of ration cards sanctioned under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), eligible beneficiaries can access their entitled food provisions from any corner of the country. The comprehensive coverage of all 36 states and union territories under the ONORC umbrella ensures that approximately 80 crore NFSA beneficiaries benefit from it.

In Budget 2023, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earmarked Rs. 1.97 lakh crore for food subsidy under the NFSA, a notable reduction from the revised estimate of Rs. 2.87 lakh crore for 2022-23. The NFSA caters to an extensive populace of around 81.35 crore individuals, with approximately 79.73 crore persons currently availing of subsidised foodgrains under NFSA and free rations through the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Kalyan Anna Yojana. The inception of the ONORC scheme in 2019 ushered in a pivotal era of nationwide ration card portability, bolstered by the deployment of electronic Point of Sale (EPoS) devices at fair price shops and Public Distribution System (PDS) centres.

Telangana Residents Can Complete Ration Card e-KYC by 31 January 2024

The last date to complete the e-KYC for ration cards has been extended by the Telangana government. Ration shops across Telangana State have been accepting applications for the e-KYC process for the past two months. The new deadline to complete e-KYC is 31 January 2024 according to Devendra Singh Chouhan, the Commissioner of Civil Supplies. Residents of Hyderabad and other districts who have not been able to complete the e-KYC process for their ration cards will benefit from this decision.
