Aadhaar, Ration Card Can’t Confirm Voter Rights, ECI Informs Supreme Court

Aadhaar, Ration Card Can’t Confirm Voter Rights, ECI Informs Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has been informed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) that in the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, ration cards and Aadhaar cards cannot be used as evidence of eligibility to vote. It made clear that while Aadhaar can prove identification, it cannot prove citizenship. Ration cards are issued by State officials in accordance with the National Food Security Act. The number of fake and temporary cards in use affects their validity. Ration cards have therefore been removed from the list of 11 documents that can be used to verify an individual's ability to vote. The ECI noted that Aadhaar and ration cards can only be used as supplemental documents and not as independent proof for entry in the electoral roll, while maintaining the validity of the SIR process.
