History of Puducherry Liberation Day

Puducherry Liberation Day, celebrated on November 1st, marks a significant turning point in the history of Puducherry, a coastal city on India's southeast coast. Prior to this event, Puducherry's historical records didn't extend back to antiquity but rather commenced with the arrival of various European powers – the Dutch, Portuguese, English, and French.

Throughout the centuries, the region was under the rule of several southern dynasties, including the Chola and Pandya dynasties. The arrival of Muslim monarchs from the north and the subsequent dominance of the Vijayanagar Empire further shaped the region's history. However, the pivotal moment came when the French East India Company established a trading center in Puducherry in 1674, gradually developing into a vital French stronghold in India. This European presence led to conflicts and wars with other colonial powers.

Puducherry experienced frequent changes in ownership, including a brief Dutch conquest in 1693, followed by its return to French control through the Treaty of Ryswick in 1699. The British, who took control of India in the late 1850s, permitted the French to retain their Indian colonies, including Puducherry. Until 1954, Puducherry, along with Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal, and Chandernagar, formed the territory of French India.

The unification of France's Indian territories with independent India was triggered by India's independence in 1947. Nevertheless, French India didn't formally become a de jure part of the Indian Union until 1962. On 1 November 1954, the territories of French India were effectively transferred to the Republic of India, symbolizing Puducherry Liberation Day. Puducherry was designated as a union territory, signifying its integration into India.
