Aluru Venkata Rao wanted to form the state of Karnataka through the Karnataka Ekikarana movement. In the year 1950, India turned out to be a republic country and several regions were established based on languages. The Kannada-speaking localities of the Madras and Bombay premierships were amalgamated with the Mysore state on 01 November 1956 to establish a Kannada-speaking state.
Old Mysore, Canara and North Karnataka were the three localities of the newly established state of Mysore. Initially, the newly-formed state was named as Mysore. But, the retention of the name of Mysore was not supported by the North Karnataka people.
The entire state commemorates the festival of Karnataka Rajyotsava with great fun and joy to honor the creation of the state. At several strategic places, Karnataka flags will be hoisted and the Karnataka anthem will be recited. It is a common festival for all communities. The State Government of Karnataka will recognise the people who have contributed significantly to development of the state and will distribute the Rajyotsava awards. Karnataka's Chief Minister will inaugurate the cultural program that is normally organised in Bangalore.
Karnataka Rajyotsava is celebrated in private companies as well. Information technology companies such as IBM, Wipro, Robert Bosch, Thomson Reuters, Accenture and Infosys encourage their employees to conduct cultural programs. Employees wear Karnataka-themed T-shirts to exhibit their support to the festival. Private schools and colleges conduct cultural programs and award the winners on the day. The Kannadigas residing in other states and countries also organise celebrations of the day.
Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka, is the best destination in Karnataka to celebrate this festival. The city has many tourist points such as Lal Bagh, Bangalore Palace, Botanical gardens, etc. The frequently visited places in Bangalore are fully decorated with flowers to attract the people on the festival day. Other places such as Belgaum, Hubli, Davangere and Mysore also organise special programs
