The word 'piravi' means birth in Malayalam. Kerala became an independent state in the Republic of India on 1 November 1956. Before becoming an independent state, Kerala was divided into 3 different provinces namely, Malabar, Travancore, and Cochin. Ever since 1 November 1956, Kerala day has been celebrated by the residents of Kerala as the state's birthday.
Kerala, along with Cochin, Travancore, and Malabar, was acknowledged as distinct regions and not regarded as a state even after India gained her freedom. Malabar was in charge of Kasaragod, Kannur, and Thalassery, while Travancore inhabited the southern part and Cochin the middle. All three areas were combined to form the state of Kerala in 1956 under the provisions of the State Reorganisation Act. Since then, this day has been known as Kerala Day or Kerala Piravi.
Wearing traditional clothing, such as dhoti shirts, settu mundu, and satavu sarees, is how people celebrate this day. Kerala Day is commemorated in a big manner by institutions and schools around Kerala. Every year, a number of competitions are held, including Malayala Bhasha Varam, debates, quizzes regarding Kerala Piravi, and other events pertaining to Kerala Piravi. The renowned President's Trophy Boat Race at Kovalam is also one of the festival's primary draws. The winners and runners-up receive trophies and monetary awards.
Kerala Piravi translates to "the birth of Kerala" or "Kerala State Formation Day" in English.
In 2025, 69th year of Kerala Piravi will be celebrated.
The Mauryan monarch Ashoka gave Kerala its most illustrious name, Cheras (Keralaputra), in the third century BCE.
