About Guru Nanak

Nanak was born on 15 April 1469. His father was an accountant in Talwandi village. Nanak had an elder sister, who married Jai Ram in 1475. Nanak initially started staying with his sister and brother-in-law. At 16, he began working under Daulat Khan Lodi. On 24 September 1487, he married Mata Sulakkani. Nanak was the founder of Sikhism. Faith, endeavoring for social justice, honest conduct and prosperity for all were a few ultimate principles of Sikhism. The Sikh community today worship Guru Nanak as the supreme power of their community. 974 hymns have been contributed by Guru Nanak.

How is Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrated?

Guru Nanak Jayanti is a three-day festival celebrated with joy. In Gurudwaras, Akhand Path is organised in Gurudwaras. Akhand Path is a practice wherein the spiritual book of the Sikh community is read continuously for 48 hours. On the eve of this precious festival, people will conduct a procession led by Panj Pyaras.

The Sikh flag will be carried in the procession, which is held across the state of Punjab. On the festival day, people will sing Asa-di-Var early in the morning. Poems will be recited by priests in Gurudwaras. Langar is prepared in the afternoon. Friends, families and relatives will take this special community lunch together. Holy songs will be sung by devotees on this special occasion.

Festival Celebration in Nankana Sahib

The festival celebrations will be extremely special in the birthplace of Guru Nanak, Nankana Sahib. Special events will be conducted by managing committee and will be attended by devotees around the world to seek blessings. Langar is served by volunteers to devotees. Karah Prasad is also distributed to the people attending this great event. Spiritual music and kirtanas will keep a blessed environment. After serving the festival food, a common prayer session is organised.

Like mentioned previously, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated in other countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada. The community members will visit the nearest Gurudwaras to submit special prayers and pay homage to the great teachings of Guru Nanak.
