Odisha announces its 2025 public holidays

The state government of Odisha has released a declaration of Federal holidays for Odisha 2025: public holidays, regional holidays, and national holidays, which shall be applicable and valid in the state of Odisha. State government employees will also be able to enjoy one optional holiday for every festival commemorated in the list given. Here are some holidays of importance in Odisha for the year 2025: 

  1.  Panchayati Raj Divas, 5th March 2025 (Wednesday): Marks the establishment of Panchayati Raj institutions in India, emphasizing de-centralisation as well as grassroots democracy. 
  1. Dola Purnima (14th March 2025, Friday): A religious festival in Odisha dedicated to the worship of Lord Krishna coincides with Holi. 
  1. Utkal Divas (1st April 2025, Tuesday): The day when Odisha was born as an independent state in 1936, this day will be celebrated as Odisha's foundation day.

For State government offices and the Revenue and Magisterial Court, the Odisha government has declared 26 public holidays for 2025 that includes all major festivals and national holidays. The holidays for the year 2025 announced by the Odisha government are Makar Sankranti and Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti or Veer Surendra Sai Jayanti (14 and 23 January); Maha Shivaratri (26 February); Panchayat Raj Divas, Dol Purnima, Holi, and Id-ul-Fitr (5, 14, 15, and 31 March); Utkal Divas, Maha Vishuva Sankranti or Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti, and Good Friday (1, 14, and 18 April).  

Some other holidays for the year are Buddha Purnima or Pt. Raghunath Murmu Jayanti and Sabitri Amavasya on 12 and 27 May, respectively; Id-ul-Zuha and Rath Yatra on 7 and 27 June, respectively. The holidays in the month of August 2025 are Independence Day or Janmashtami, Ganesh Puja, and Nuakhai which will be observed on 15, 27 and 28 August. Odisha Declares 9 September 2024 as Public Holiday for Nuakhai Festival

The Odisha government has declared 9 September 2024 as a public holiday for all government, government-aided, and private schools in observance of the Nuakhai festival, which was celebrated on 8 September 2024. Following the festival, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that all state government offices, magisterial courts, and educational institutions will remain closed on 9 September 2024. Additionally, the Revenue and Disaster Management Department issued a notice confirming the closure of banks and financial institutions statewide on that day. A formal notification regarding this holiday has been released by the Odisha government.

Odisha Chief Minister announced a two-day public holiday on 7 and 8 July due to Rath Yatra. The participation of President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled in the Rath Yatra celebrations, and she will be taking part in chariot pulling on 7 July.

Odisha government announces holiday for employees during polling days

The Odisha government has announced holidays during Lok Sabha Elections for state government offices and magisterial courts (executive). The polling days are set for the following dates: 13 May 2024 (Monday), 20 May 2024 (Monday), 25 May 2024 (Saturday), and 1 June 2024 (Saturday), all designated as holidays. This applies to offices situated within parliamentary constituencies and assembly segments. The Odisha government declared a public holiday tomorrow, 17 January, for the occasion of inauguration of Srimandir Parikrama Project.
