Bank Holidays in April 2025

The banks operating in the country will remain closed on the dates listed in the table below in the month of April 2025. These holidays will be in addition to the regular bank holidays, i.e., 2nd and 4th Saturdays of a month.

Given below are brief descriptions for each holiday in April 2025:

1. Odisha Day: On this day in history, Odisha was created as a distinct province of British India. The state was established on April 1st, 1936. People enjoy celebrating by adorning stores and making merry. There are also many cultural events and competitions.
2. Ram Navami: The festival is one of the most important Hindu festivals. It celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On the occasion, temples of Rama are decorated while people offer water to the Sun God as he is believed to be the ancestor of Lord Rama.
3. Babu Jagjivan Ram Birthday: Babu Jagjivan Ram, a politician who made a substantial contribution to the founding of the All-India Depressed Classes League, is honoured on his birthday in Telangana. In 1937, he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
4. Mahavir Jayanti: Mahavir Jayanti marks the day when Lord Mahavir, the founder of Jainism was born. The day holds special significance for the Jain community. On the day of the festival, people engage themselves in charitable work while prayers are organised in temples dedicated to the spiritual teacher of Jainism.
   
5. Biju: The Biju festival which is a three-day-long colourful one is celebrated by the Chakma. During the festival, different cultural programs are performed which highlight the indigenous people's distinctive cultural heritage. Biju marks the end of the previous year and celebrates the Bangla New Year.
6. Bohag Bihu: Also known as Rongali Bihu, Bohag Bihu marks the beginning of the Assamese new year. The festival is celebrated with feasts, music, and dancing. The festivities run for almost a month with various cultural events being held around the state.
7. Ashoka's birth anniversary: While historians still cannot agree on the Mauryan emperor's birth date, the Bihar government has declared April 14 as a public holiday to commemorate Ashoka's birthday.
8. Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti: The day commemorates the birth anniversary of B.R Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian constitution. On the day, processions are taken out and statues of Ambedkar are beautifully decorated. People pay homage to the social reformer on the day for his immense contribution.
9. Maha Vishuba Sankranti: The festival is also celebrated as Odia New year or Pana Sankranti or Mesha Sankranti. The day marks the start of the new Odia almanac. To mark the occasion, Odia people prepare a sweet concoction known as 'Pana' which is distributed amongst everyone.
10. Bengali New Year: It is the celebration of the Bengali New Year, as the name implies. The Bengali solar calendar is used to determine the festival's date. Family time, processions, and fairs all commemorate the day. Festive dishes are served to friends and family, such as confections and sweets.
11. Vishu: It is the new year festival of Kerala. The day is the appropriate time to offer oblations to Lord Vishnu. The day indicates the movement of the sun to Aries. Farmers begin the ploughing of land and other agricultural activities.
12. Cheiraoba: Cheiraoba festival is the celebration of the Manipuri New year. This is a sacred festival and hence people clean and decorate their houses on the occasion. To mark the occasion, locals climb the nearest hill tops as it signifies the rise of the human civilization.
13. Himachal Day: Himachal Day is celebrated to commemorate the creation of the state. On the day, a grand parade takes place where the Governor and the Chief Minister address the gathering. Various cultural programs are also held on the occasion.
14. Vaisakhi: Vaisakhi is celebrated as a harvest festival. People sing, dance, and wear festive clothes. It marks the start of the new year in the Nanakshahi solar calendar. The Khalsa Panth organisation was established during the Vaisakhi festival, hence Sikhs commemorate the first five men who comprised the Khalsa with five symbols of purity and courage.
15. Garia Puja: It is celebrated as a harvest festival by the ethnic tribes in Tripura. Celebrated with a lot of pomp and gaiety, the puja is done to please God Garia. The god is worshipped to bestow the people with peace, wealth, children, and domestic animals.
