About Lhabab Deuchen in Sikkim

It is one of the major festivals among Buddhists. The festival celebrates the return of Buddha Shakyamuni from heaven to earth. It is believed that Buddha Shakyamuni went to heaven for three months during which he repaid the kindness of his mother by freeing her from Samsara. He also taught dharma to the gods.

The main goal of Lhabab Deuchen is to pray and practice extra Dharma. On this auspicious day, Buddhism followers visit monasteries to burn incense, light butter lamps, and to offer special prayers to Lord Buddha. Lamas and monks spend the day reading holy writings and chanting mantras to purify the air.

Followers of Buddhism also place ladders that are freshly painted on rocks near the monasteries. This practice represents Buddha's descent from Trayastrimsa (Heaven of Thirty-Three).
