Passports serve as crucial identification and travel documents, and it's important to ensure they are valid when planning international trips. A reissued passport retains your identity but updates the validity and any necessary details. Passport reissue is generally required after 10 years of issuance. You can check the expiration date on your passport, which is the date followed by either 'Final' or 'F' indicating the last day of activation.
Passport reissue applications can be made from within 1 year from the date of expiry and any time after expiry. Passport reissue is often confused with the term passport renewal, which is done only in special circumstances such as Short Validity Passports (SVP).
In case of passport reissue, the new passport will be released while the old passport will be cancelled and returned. However, any of the active visas on the old passport will still be valid and can be used till expiry of the particular visa.

Passport renewal is done for Short Validity Passport (SVP). Renewals are not to be confused with Reissue, which deals with changes/re-issuance of passport under a wide range of circumstances as described in details in the next section.
For renewal of a Short Validity Passport (SVP), you need to submit Docs 1, 5 and 29. You have to make the application online and submit relevant proofs of urgency as required.
SVP passport is generally issued for people including students appearing for exams like SAT, TOEFL etc., non-delivery of passport due to loss in transit, Indians residing abroad who wish to travel to India, or if a criminal case is pending for the applicant in a court.
The validity of renewal of SVPs depends on the RPO/Assistant Passport Officer' discretion.
Passport renewal applies only to Short Validity Passports (SVP) issued in special cases, while re‑issue is for expired, lost, damaged, or updated passports, and involves issuing a new passport booklet with a new number.
A passport is re‑issued rather than renewed when it has expired, been lost, stolen, damaged, has full visa pages or needs major detail changes like name or address.
Yes, your old passport booklet must be submitted during the re‑issue process; it will then be cancelled and returned unless it is lost or stolen.
Upon renewal, the passport number remains the same, whereas re‑issue always results in a new passport number and booklet.
You must submit your original passport along with self‑attested copies of key pages, proof of age, address, identity, and supporting affidavits or FIR in cases like loss or damage.
Police verification may be required for both processes, though if there is no change in details and the application is within expiry in normal service, verification is often waived.
You can apply for renewal or re‑issue up to 1 year before your passport expires, and at any time after expiry.
