In addition, older persons can finish their procedures more quickly and without having to wait in huge queues at a special counter.

The new system requires all passport applicants to be physically present in order to supply their biometrics and photos, even if the elderly person may not always be able to tolerate going to the PSK.

The Passports Act and Passports Rule's general procedures, rules, and regulations pertaining to passport applications and issuance would be applicable. 

Eligibility Criteria for Senior Citizens

A senior citizen is anyone who has attained the age of 65 years. However, in regards to passport applications, a person qualifies to be a senior citizen if they meet the following requirements:

  1. Resident of Jammu and Kashmir:
     If you are a Jammu and Kashmir resident, then men should be 65 years and above. For women, the senior citizen age is 60 years.
  2. For the rest of India:
     If you are above the age of 65 years and you are not a resident of Jammu and Kashmir.

You are a resident of Jammu and Kashmir if you fall under any of these three categories:

  1. You were born in Jammu and Kashmir.
  2. Your permanent address is in Jammu and Kashmir
  3. Your present address is in Jammu and Kashmir.

Note: This is not applicable to Indian citizens who are from other states and have been deployed on official duty in Jammu and Kashmir by the Government of India.

How to Apply for a Passport for Senior Citizens?

Special passports are not issued to senior citizens. A standard passport will be provided with a ten-year validity period. A police verification will be required before the passport is issued.

Together with the application and other necessary paperwork, the individual must also be present at the Passport Seva Kendra. No arrangement exists for someone else to attend on your account.  

The Passports Act and Passports Rule's general procedures, rules, and regulations pertaining to passport applications and issuance would be applicable. 

  1. To apply for a passport, the applicant must fill in the application online and make the payment for the fees.
  2. Senior citizens are eligible to walk in without any appointment. So booking of the slot is not needed.
  3. You must obtain an ARN which is required when you visit the Passport Seva Kendra. In addition, applicants should also refer to any advisory issued by the concerned Passport Offices from time to time.

Documents Required for a Senior Citizen Passport

Subjective documents are listed. The Assistance Passport Officer (APO) or Regional Passport Officer (RPO) may demand further paperwork. The APO/RPO will make the final decision.

When applying for a passport for the first time, post-police verification will be used if you have provided your voter ID, Aadhar card, PAN, and an affidavit in the form of Annexure-I.

This makes passport issue more rapid. There won't be any more costs needed, however the Aadhar number must be validated online first. If necessary, PAN (Permanent Account Number) and EPIC may also need to be verified from their respective databases.

  3. Copy of the passport of the child who is staying abroad. A copy of the page bearing the parent's name is required. The child should be at least 18 years old.

Passport Renewal for Senior Citizens 

Compared to other individuals, older citizens have somewhat laxer passport renewal requirements. To begin with, a senior citizen's passport can be renewed at least a year before the existing one expires. Additionally, they are not penalised for renewing their passport after it has expired.  

The documents required to apply for passport renewal for senior citizens are - 

  1. Address proof (telephone bill, gas bill, etc.) 
  2. Both the first two and last pages of the passport, which have been self-attested, and the current passport are authentic.

For a fresh passport, senior citizens will have to pay the same fees as any other adult. The fees depends on the number of pages you require in your booklet. The fee also varies depending on whether you choose the normal scheme or the tatkal scheme.
