What is Passport Seva Kendra? 

A branch of the Indian passport offices is called Passport Seva Kendra. In tier 1 and tier 2 cities, these offices oversee passport delivery and other associated services. They also provide online services, which removes the need for agents to handle applications.  

Passport Seva Kendra's (PSKs) are branches of Passport Offices in India that provide efficient passport services in cities. They allow online applications, reducing the need for agents and ensuring safe, fast, and transparent processing. Launched in 2010, the Passport Seva Project aims to improve passport services through a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services.

It integrates various government departments to deliver passports smoothly while the Ministry of External Affairs handles core functions. When it comes to passport issuing and processing in India, the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) is essential. The goal of the Passport Seva project was to improve and speed up the passport application process.

Services Offered by Passport Seva 

The following is the list of services offered by Passport Seva: 

  1. Issue of Fresh Passport: Apply for a fresh passport in case of first-time applicants for a respective passport category. 
  1. Re-issue of Passport: Apply for a re-issue of your passport in the following cases: 
  • Change in personal details. 
  • Validity expired within the last three years or due to expire within one year. 
  • Validity expired more than three years ago. 
  • Exhaustion of passport pages. 
  • Damaged passport. 
  • Lost passport. 
  1. Note: If you never held an Ordinary Passport, you must apply under the "fresh" category, even if you currently have an Official/Diplomatic Passport.

Passport Seva Login 

The Passport Seva login portal offers various options to apply for a new passport or renew an existing one. The step-by-step guide to log into Passport Seva portal is mentioned below: 

  1. Visit the official Passport Seva website (https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink).
  1. Click the green "Existing User? Login" button on the left side of the screen. 
  1. Enter your User ID and password, which you received during registration. 
  1. Choose one of the following options: 
  1. Select “Fresh Passport/Passport Reissue”. 
  1. Choose the “Normal” option on the next page and proceed. 
  1. You can either download the form, fill it in manually, upload it later, or complete it online. 
  1. Ensure all details are accurate as per your other documents. 
  1. Verify the information and click the submit button. 
  1. After submission, go to the new page showing your saved or submitted applications, and click “View”. 
  1. Select your application and click “Pay and Schedule Appointment”. 
  1. Option for online payment and click “Next”.  
  1. Alternatively, you can also generate an offline challan and pay at an SBI branch. (Challan valid for 85 days from generation, takes two days to update the payment status).

  1. Click “Pay and Book Appointment” to proceed to the payment gateway. 
  1. You will be redirected to the appointment details page after making the payment.

Apply for Passport Through Passport Seva Kendra Offline

The following are the steps to apply passport through Passport Seva Kendra offline:

  1. Keep ready all the required documents for applying for passport at PSK
  2. Either download the passport application form from PSK website or collect the form from the PSK center
  3. Fill in the application form and sign it
  4. Book an appointment at the nearest PSK center through official website or by calling the PSK helpline
  5. Visit the PSK on the appointment day along with your application form and documents
  1. Complete the required procedures as per the instructions given in the PSK
  2. Pay the application fee depending on the type of application form that you have filled in
  3. Obtain the receipt that will be provided to you after making the payment
  4. The passport will be sent to the registered address of the applicant after few days or weeks depending on the certain factors

It is mandatory that the form should be submitted online, and an appointment has been scheduled before you visit the PSK. The step-by-step procedure to submit the form online is mentioned below:

Step 2 : By clicking the 'New User Registration' option on the front page, you can finish the portal's registration process. 

Step 3 : Use your registered login credentials to log in to the Passport Seva Online Portal.

Step 4 : Click on the 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport' link marked on the portal.

Step 5 : Fill in the application form with the relevant information and submit the same.

Step 6 : Click on the 'Pay and Schedule Appointment' button.

Step 7 : Click on the 'View Saved/Submitted Applications' button to set up the date of your appointment.

Step 8 : To print your application receipt, which includes your Application Reference Number (ARN), click on the 'Print Application Receipt' link.

  4. Click on ‘Register Now’ and entire basic details if you are a new user 
  5. Select the desired passport office from the drop-down list provided. 
  6. Enter the captcha code in the designated field.

  1. Visit the official Passport Seva Kendra website
  2. Click on the 'Track Application Status' link
  3. Enter your Passport Application Number that you have received while submitting the application
  4. Select your Application Type, such as Tatkal or Normal, depending on the type of application submitted
  5. Enter your Date of Birth
  6. Click on the 'Track Status'

  1. Police Clearance Certificate (PCC): Issued for background checks. 
  1. Background Verification for Global Entry Program (GEP): For Indian citizens enrolled in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry Program. 
  1. Surrender Certificate: Individuals who are surrendering their Indian passport due to renunciation of Indian citizenship and acquiring foreign nationality are issued with surrender certificate. 
  1. Line of Control (LoC) Permits: Residents of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh wishing to visit relatives across the LoC for valid reasons are issued with LoC permits by Passport Offices in Jammu and Srinagar. 
  1. Certificate of Identity: Issued to stateless persons, including Tibetan refugees residing in India.

  1. The main responsibility of a PSK is to accept the passport application form from the applicant. 
  2. After accepting the application form and required documents, PSK performs the verification, background check, and prints the passport. 
  3. On successful verification and approval from the passport officer, PSK issues the passport to the applicant. 
  4. PSK addresses the queries regarding passport applications. 
  5. PSK also maintains the record of application received, passport application processed, and passport issued.

India’s Passport Gains Global Reach with Access to 59 Countries

In the 2025 Henley Passport Index, India’s passport has achieved a big rise as it jumped eight places to reach 77th in the world. Indian citizens can now visit 59 countries without needing a visa in advance, as they can either have visa‑free or visa-on-arrival access. Some countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives, and Thailand allow visa-free travel, while other countries like Sri Lanka, Macau, and Myanmar offer a visa-on-arrival. This is the achievement that India has made in the rankings in recent years. The improvement shows that travel is getting easier for Indians, and more countries are opening up. Globally, Singapore has the most powerful passport, which has access to 193 countries. Japan and South Korea are in the second position. The UK and US passport rankings dropped in 2025, with the UK passport allowing travel to 186 countries, while the US passport offers access to 182. On the other end, Afghanistan has the weakest passport which has access to only 25 countries.

First Passport Seva Kendra in Ahmedabad East

On Monday, the first Passport Seva Kendra in eastern Ahmedabad opened in Bapunagar. The Passport Seva Kendra was inaugurated by KJ Srinivasa, the Joint Secretary of the PSP ((Passport Seva Programme) and Chief Passport Officer. The centre was relocated from Mithakali to Bapunagar and aims to serve the residents of the Ahmedabad East parliamentary constituency. The new passport Seva Kendra is equipped to provide passport services to a large number of people, efficiently.

Passport Seva 2.0 Rollout, 2025

The External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has announced the launch of Passport Seva 2.0 on 24 June 2025. The new e-passport was rolled out nationwide on the 13th Passport Seva Divas. The upgraded version incorporates advanced technology to enhance travel documentation and security. The new passports have e-chips holding the biometric details of the cardholder and enable contactless reading at immigration. They are also tamper-proof due to their encryption and chip technology. The new passports are compliant with the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) standards and are recognised globally. As per the latest reports, the upgraded passports will be issued phase-wise and in the upcoming years will become the standard for new applicants.

India rolls out new chip-based e-passports nationwide to ensure safety and convenience. The new passports can store important data of the passport holder, this preventing attempts to create duplicate passports.
