  • What is police verification?
In India, the police must conduct a background check on every applicant for a passport. This is carried out to confirm that the applicant actually resides at the address specified on the application and to guarantee that the passport office only receives accurate information.
  • How is the police verification done?
Verifying with the police is a straightforward and transparent process. As soon as the applicant has fulfilled all requirements at the relevant passport office, the authorities send the information to the regional police station in charge. The application is handled and verified by an officer simultaneously. A police officer calls the applicant at the provided number to confirm the appointment time. During the visit, the applicant can be asked to provide identification and evidence of residency to confirm the information is true.
  • What if the applicant is not present at the address mentioned at the time of police verification?
The applicant may speak with the policeman in these situations and provide an explanation for the absence. If the applicant has good reasons, the police officer may even request that they come to the police station with two references and identification.
  • How much time does it take for police verification?
The police verification usually takes somewhere between 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Why is police verification mandatory for a passport?
A country's passport is one of the most important and valuable documents. To make sure that it doesn't get into the wrong hands, police verification is required.

  • Is police verification done for government/public/statutory body employees?

  • Will there be a police verification for employees who have been transferred from a public sector/government/statutory body? If yes, what documents are needed?
Yes, in such a case, a police verification is required and the following documents are required:
    • Fresh passport issuance:
In the case of the name change of public sector/government/statutory body employee, a pre-police verification is done and post-police verification is done after submitting the Tatkaal documents.

  • What does it mean when the status of police report shows as ‘adverse’?
The most prevalent problem in these circumstances is that the applicant's police verification record indicates that they do not reside at the provided address or possibly that they were not there when the police verified them.
