History of Himachal Day

The pre-independence state of Himachal Pradesh is where the origins of Himachal Day can be found. The name Himachal comes from two Sanskrit words: 'Achal' (which means lap) and 'Hima' (which means snow). The region is in the lap of the Himalayas. Prior to the British Empire's colonial expansion, the Gurkhas occupied Himachal Pradesh, Shimla, and nearby regions. After the Anglo-Nepalese War, the Gurkha kingdom was ultimately vanquished, and the British took control of Himachal Pradesh. 

Most hill state leaders supported the British during World War I by providing raw materials and labour. In honour of this state's illustrious past, Himachal Day is celebrated.

Formation of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh became the Chief Commissioner's province on 15 April 1948, the day after independence. As a result, people celebrate this day as Himachal Day. On 26 January 1950, Himachal was admitted as a C state; on 1 November 1956, it was accepted as a union territory. The State of Himachal Pradesh Act, enacted by the parliament in 1970, established Himachal Pradesh as a new state, taking effect in January 1971.

Himachal Pradesh was accepted as the 18th state of the Indian Union, and 25 January is observed annually as Statehood Day. This is an additional state holiday that is observed every year. Statehood Day honours the day that Himachal Pradesh became a state.

Himachal Day Significance

The government of Himachal Pradesh is parliamentary. The state is progressive, with 82.80% of its population being literate. It has 12 districts, ranks 18th in terms of area, and ranks 21st in terms of population. As of 2016, 99.5% of households in the hilly state had access to electricity.

On Himachal Day, the people of Himachal Pradesh celebrate 74 magnificent years of progress. Although the state has made great progress, there is still room for improvement in terms of tourism and industrial expansion.

Himachal Day Facts

1. Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar was a brilliant social reformer and freedom fighter who gave Himachal Pradesh its own unique identity. He was Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister. He played a part in the creation of Himachal Day.
2. Dr. Parmar held the position of Chief Minister of the state twice: from 8 March 1952 to 31 October 1956 and 1 July 1963 to 28 January 1977. 
3. Because of his involvement with Himachal Day, he became known as the 'Legend of Himachal Pradesh.'
4. He was so giving that when he received money and assets from his party's campaigns, he moved them from urban to rural regions.
