The festival of Garia Puja lasts for a period of seven days. The puja begins on the last day of the Chaitra month and ends on the seventh day of the Vaisakha month. The last day of the puja is declared as a regional holiday. Garia Puja is the biggest festival celebrated in Tripura.

What is Garia Puja?

Garia Puja is an important festival observed by the people of Tripura. It takes place in the month of Boishakh Bisi-kwtal for seven days and nights. This festival goes by a number of other names, including Sangrain, Buisu, Bihu, Busy, and Boisabi. Adorned with flowers and garlands, a bamboo pole represents the deity of wealth and livestock, Lord Garia.

It is forbidden for anyone to pass under the shadow of the festival's patron god, Garia, for fear of enraging him. The children perform drumming, singing, and dancing in front of Lord Garia during the Garia Festival in order to please him.

Rituals of Garia Puja

As part of the rituals of the festival, fowls are sacrificed to please the deity. Apart from chick fowls, the ingredients required in the puja include earthen pots, cotton thread, rice, riccha, rice beer, eggs, and wine. The sacrifice of fowls and eggs are carried out during the festival as they are considered symbols of fertility. People pray for well-being of loved ones and better yields from their plantations in the coming year. Following the sacrifice, the priest forecasts the coming year. It needs to be mentioned here that the first harvest of the year is also considered as a sacrifice. During the festival, no one is allowed to cross the shadow of the symbolic god, and children sing and dance to the tune of drums to appease Lord Garia.

Other Attractions of Garia Puja

In addition of the rituals of the puja, Goria dance is an attraction for the people during the festival. The dance is performed by young boys and girls. The group of dancers carry a long-decorated bamboo pole which symbolically depicts Lord Garia and place it in the middle of the courtyard. They chant religious hymns and songs and perform the dance around it. It needs to be mentioned here that the dance form had a total of 108 mudras. Some of these have been forgotten over time and due to cultural factors.

A carnival is also held on the occasion of the festival where the culture of the state can be experienced.
