PAN Card Migration

PAN Card Migration is the process of moving from an existing AO to a new AO. The Permanent Account Number, or PAN, is a laminated card issued by the Income Tax Department that comprises a ten-character alphanumeric identity.

The card also includes the individual's name and date of birth in addition to the alphanumeric identifier. The IT department can use the unique ID to link all of the company's financial transactions, such as tax payments, income tax returns, TDS and TCS credits, and so on.

What is PAN Migration?

When a person transfers from one state to another, they must change their assessing officer (AO). The AO is in charge of examining the taxes due for all PANs registered in his or her jurisdiction. 

Why is PAN Migration Necessary?

It is necessary because if you change your residential address, it becomes quite difficult to communicate with the assessing officer in case of disputes. Also, it becomes a tedious affair for the AO to assess your tax details.

Simple Process for PAN Migration

To get the PAN migrated, you need to follow the process mentioned below:

Step 1 - File an application to the assessing officer (AO) who currently holds jurisdiction to migrate your PAN Card to the new AO.

Step 2 - An application is also sent to the new AO requesting the change.

Step 3 - The source AO has to accept the transfer request.

Step 4 - On accepting, the application is forwarded to the present Income Tax Commissioner for his confirmation

Step 5 - Upon confirmation, the PAN is migrated to the new AO's jurisdiction

How to Migrate your PAN if your Address has Changed?

The following are the steps on how to migrate your PAN if your address has changed:

Step 1 - Firstly, you need to send an application requesting to migrate your PAN to your current AO.

Step 2 -Then you have to send a PAN migration request letter to the new AO.

Step 3 - If your PAN Card migration request is approved by the current AO, then he or she will send it to the Commissioner of Income Tax.

Step 4 - Finally, the PAN will be migrated to jurisdiction of destination AO.

How to Know Whether PAN has been Migrated to the New AO?

To know whether your PAN has been migrated, you need to follow the steps mentioned below:

Step 1 - Visit incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

Step 2 - Click on 'Know Your TAN

Step 3 - Enter your PAN and mobile number.

Step 4 - Enter the OTP sent on the mobile number linked with the Income Tax department.

Step 5 - Click on 'Validate'

Step 6 -The AO details will be displayed on the screen

How to Check Your PAN  Migration Status?

The following are the steps to check your PAN migration status:

Step  1 - Visit the income tax e-filing portal

Step  2 - Choose the ‘Know Your TAN option.

Step  3 - Enter your PAN number and registered mobile number.

Step  4 - You will receive an OTP on your mobile number.

Step  5 - Once the verification is done, choose the ‘Validate’ button.

Step  6 - A dialogue box will appear highlighting your Migration/AO details.

How Know Jurisdiction of Your New Assessing Officer?

You will be able see the jurisdiction of an AO on the NSDL Portal. Given below are the steps:

Step 1 - Choose the letter of your district’s name.

Step 2 - Click on the name of your city.

Step 3  - The details pf your AO will be available on the website.
