Subhas Chandra Bose was born into a wealthy family in Cuttack, Odisha. Netaji was an excellent student who placed second in his matriculation exam and fourth in the Indian Civil Services (ICS) exam. In 1921, he left his lucrative ICS position and returned to India from England to take part in the country's war for independence.

Netaji, who was at first a member of the INC (Indian National Congress), believed that in order to achieve liberation, one must go to war with the British. To fight the British, he established the Azad Hind Fauj military regiment. Millions of young people were motivated by Netaji's socialist principles and ideas to take up the cause of independence.

In order to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisting the Indian national flag, Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed three islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago last year. Most schools and institutions in the state of West Bengal host special festivities to honour Netaji's birthday. On January 23, flag hoisting is a custom that is widely observed. Choirs and orchestra ensembles hum patriotic tunes and anthems in universities and classrooms.
