National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) is a payment or fund transfer method which facilitates one-to-one fund transfers. This service allows bank account holders such as individuals, firms and corporates to electronically transfer funds from any bank branch to any other bank branch within the NEFT network by RBI.
NEFT operates from 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. on weekdays, from Monday to Friday and from 8 A.M. to 1 P.M. on Saturdays.
The account holder who originates is fund transfer is referred to as the originator or the remitter, the originators authorise their bank to debit their account and remit the specified fund to the beneficiary. If the fund is not settled due to any reason, it gets credited back to the originator's account, however, in case of a walk-in customer, they are contacted by the branch for the refunds.
Currently, all Citibank branches are NEFT enabled. In order to view the list of participating branches for the NEFT service, please refer to the RBI's website - http://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/neft.aspx
All bank account holders such as Individuals, firms or corporates can use the Citibank Online or Mobile Banking app to use the NEFT services. Moreover, non-customers can also walk-in to any of the NEFT branches to transfer money using the NEFT services. By providing details including complete address, telephone number, etc., the non-customers can transfer up to a maximum of Rs.50,000 in one transaction.
Yes, NEFT service is also available through ATMs.
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is assigned to banks which participate in the IFSC network. It is an alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies branches from where the funds are getting debited and also identifies the branch where the fund is getting settled. The 11 digit code is designed with first 4 alpha characters which represent the bank and the last 6 characters which represent the branch. IFSC helps NEFT in locating the beneficiary's branch and credits the fund without any issues.
There are no minimum or maximum limits on the value of the transactions, however, a maximum of Rs.50,000 is the limit for cash-based remittances to Nepal.
You can find the IFSC printed on your account statement and it can also be located in the account opening welcome kit. Any individual can perform a simple online search to obtain the IFSC of any branch, provided they are members of the IFSC network. You can also visit RBI's website to view the IFSC for any branch across India.
If due to any reason, the transaction fails, the originator can expect a credit back for the fund transfer amount within 3-4 hours.
The originators and the beneficiaries are advised to get in touch with their bank to resolve issues arising from non-credit or delay in debit/credit of funds. If the issues are not resolved, the NEFT Help Desk at National Clearing Cell, Reserve Bank of India can be contacted through an email or correspondence addressed to the General Manager, Reserve Bank of India, National Clearing Centre, First Floor, Free Press House, Nariman Point, Mumbai - 400 021.
