The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) is a flagship scheme of the Government of India aimed at providing affordable housing to the rural poor.

PM Awas Gramin was launched in 2016 with the goal of providing pucca houses with basic amenities to all houseless households living in kutcha or dilapidated houses in rural areas by 2024, with a view to boost the 'Housing for All' scheme.

House Size Standards for PMAY-G

The main aim of the PMAY-G scheme is to provide pucca house with some of the basic amenities. This scheme is meant for people who do not own a house and people who live in kutcha houses or houses which are severely damaged. At present, the minimum size of the houses to be built under the PMAY-G scheme has been increased to 25 sq. mt. from 20 sq. mt.

Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAYG) Eligibility Requirements

The following are the eligibility criteria, which include specific deprivation scores and different priority lists: 

  1. Houseless families 
  2. Families with houses having zero, one, or two rooms with a kutcha wall and kutcha roof. 
  3. Households without a literate adult above 25 years of age. 
  4. Households without an adult male member aged between 16 and 59 years of age. 
  1. Households without any adult member between 16 and 59 years of age. 
  2. Households without any able-bodied members and with a disabled member. 
  3. Landless households who derive income from casual labour.
  4. Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Others, and Minorities. 

Factors that will exclude Beneficiaries from PMAY Gramin Scheme

  1. Candidates that have a motorised two wheeler, three-wheeler, four-wheeler and agriculture equipment or fishing boat.
  2. Candidates that have a Kisan Credit Card (KCC) with a limit greater or equal to Rs.50,000
  3. Any household that has at least one member that is employed with the government or earning more than Rs. 10,000 per month.
  4. Any person that pays Income Tax, professional tax or owns a refrigerator or landline phone connection.

These are some of the documents or details required to apply for the PMAYG scheme:

  1. Aadhaar number
  2. Consent document to use Aadhaar on behalf of the beneficiary
  3. MGNREGA-registered beneficiary job card number

There are four sections to the beneficiary registration process, which are:

  1. Personal details
  2. Bank account details
  3. Convergence details
  4. Details from the concerned office

To successfully register or add the beneficiary, follow the steps given below:

  • Visit the official website for login PMAYG.
  • Fill in the details required in the personal details section (such as gender, mobile number, Aadhaar number, etc.)
  • Upload the consent form required to use the Aadhaar number
  • Click on the search button to find the beneficiary name, PMAY ID, and priority.
  •  Click on ''Select to Register''.
  • The beneficiary details will be automatically generated and displayed.
  • The remaining beneficiary details can now be filled in, such as ownership type, relation, Aadhaar number, etc.
  • Upload the consent form required to use the Aadhaar number on behalf of the beneficiary
  • In the next section, add the beneficiary account details in the required fields, such as beneficiary name, bank account number, etc.
  • If the beneficiary wants to avail a loan, select ''Yes'' and enter the required loan amount.
  • In the next section, enter the MGNREGA job card number and Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) number of the beneficiary
  • The next section will be filled in by the concerned office

The beneficiaries under the PMAY-G scheme are selected by the government using a process that makes use of the Socio-Economic Caste Census of 2011 (SECC). The process of selecting the beneficiaries is as follows:

PMAY-G Progress:

PMAY-G has made significant progress in providing housing to the rural poor. As of November 19, 2024, over 3.21 crore houses have been sanctioned under the scheme, and over 2.67 crore houses have been completed.

As of February 2, 2025, under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), a cumulative target of 3.79 crore houses has been allotted to States and Union Territories. Out of these, 3.34 crore houses have been sanctioned, and 2.69 crore houses have been completed.

This data is more recent than the previously mentioned figures from November 19, 2024, which reported 3.21 crore houses sanctioned and 2.67 crore houses completed.
